Shop It To Me

We recently awarded $50 to Banana Republic for a great story about Shop It To Me.

Anne from Saint Paul, Minnesota was the lucky winner! Here’s what she had to say:

“…I have a serious health problem that prevents me from going out to shop most of the time. Before using salemail I sent my colorblind husband out to the stores but that did not work well. He came home with overpriced, out of date clothes. So I turned to the vast and confusing Internet. I found things but paid too much or purchased things from a less than reputable store and ended up with junk. All of this changed when I found salemail.

Not only does salemail have all of the brands and stores I love, it brings me an enormous selection of wonderful clothing in my size and at my price! I depend on salemail for almost all of my fashion needs. It’s a wonderful service and I tell everyone who likes fashion about it. Salemail is not only my personal shopper, it saves me money, finds everything I need…I’d be in a burlap sack without salemail!”

Anne — we wish you good luck shopping!

This past Saturday night, I attended “Shopping! The Musical” in Union Square, San Francisco. I left underwhelmed with the performance, but entertained by many of the true-isms presented about shopping.

I don’t want to spend time detailing the amateur performance, but most definitely agree with Richard Connema’s review that said, “…parodies are not political but more a social commentary on the art of shopping. Everyone who sees the revue will identify with some aspect of shopping.”

A few of my favorite scenes:

- “Shopping With My Wife” – highlighted the difference between the way Men and Women approach grocery shopping. Her with a set and specified checklist of items she came for, very deliberate and particular. Him with a browsing mentality of whatever looks great, catches his eye, or a new offering. Together, they compliment one another well to fill the fridge!

- “Department Store Blues” – reflected the poor customer service given today, and how we are often countered with lines like “today is my first day”, “I’m helping another customer now”, or “You can check at another store if you want”…

- “Click” — ONLINE SHOPPING!!! This scene detailed the glory of shopping at the 3am hour and being addicted to buying via the internet. It’s so easy to just click click click!

- “Purchase Interruptus” – The agonies of waiting in line behind a slow lady at the store who has insane requests of paying in multiple transactions, price-checking merchandise, and more…all while you’re holding melting ice cream!

So — overall, a humorous take on the experience of shopping, but left the viewer with much to be desired in terms of the acting ability, set, and professionalism of this performance!

I first came across this hilarious video in the Wall Street Journal blog Buzzwatch. I was amazed by the talent of these guys when jumping into their pants — and watched in amazement. Then I found out it’s part of Levi’s 501 campaign…and has been spreading like wildfire!

These guys do gymnastic-like moves…but I must say that I am much more familiar with other tricks to squeeze into pants (can anyone say jeans that are fresh out of the dryer?!?!) Most well-known moves are probably laying on the bed and kicking your legs in the air, squats or lunges around your bedroom, etc etc etc…

Just sit back and watch!

We hear that it’s not incredibly fun shopping for clothing when you’re not your normal size or feeling your best. Some have said that online shopping, in the comfort of your own home, can help ease these feelings of being on spectacle for you pregnant ladies.

Remember, no need to unsubscribe from Shop It To Me when you’re pregnant… you can simply change your size profile on Shop It To Me to focus on Maternity wear.

Some of the most popular and recommended maternity brands? While Gap and Old Navy have larger sale selections than most others and great basics, be sure to also select Japanese Weekend and Belly Basics. Believe it or not, Juicy Couture even has maternity hoodies and dresses (see below)! Paige and Citizens for Humanity have maternity jeans and Splendid tees are often long enough to provide some extra coverage.

Juicy Couture Maternity ‘Dreamy’ Dress
Reg $258.00
Now $153.90
Juicy Couture Maternity Velour Hoody
Reg $108.00

I want to introduce one of our Trendsetters – Louise from Shopaphilia.

This is a site that hunts down fabulous fashion finds at affordable prices, proving that looking chic doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Shopaphilia is a great site to bookmark or subscribe to for updates on sales. According to Louise, “finding the perfect piece and scoring a great deal at the same time is a thrill that everyone should enjoy.” Recently, Shopaphilia highlighted summer work tops and suits.

Shopaphilia interviewed the President of Shop It To Me, Charlie. Here’s an excerpt from that interview, and you can read the rest by clicking the link here.

**

shopaphilia: Where did the idea for Shop It To Me come from? What were the inspirations?

Charlie: I have always been a big fan of sales & deals. Costco & Trader Joe’s have some of my favorite places to shop since back when TJ’s was located only in LA and Costco was called The Price Club.

I started to look at online deals a few years ago but was frustrated as I always seemed to find out about sales the day after they happened, or only when the items went out of stock. So I came up with a personal shopper where you could enter in the items you were looking for and it would tell you when they would go on sale. I told this to female friends and family members, and they said “You have to do this for clothing!” and hence Shop It To Me was born.

We love sales. You should know that by now!

In addition to continual markdowns throughout the year, most of the major department stores and some of the other chain stores have annual sales. I always find myself wondering “When is the Nordstrom Anniversary sale?”… Although they may easily vary from year-to-year, depending on their business climate and needs, being the sale experts that we are at Shop It To Me, we put together a ‘cheat-sheet’ based on some past sales events to help you predict when you should get excited because you’re getting close to sale time!…Hope this helps!

Nordstrom - 1/2 Yearly Sale for Women & Kids in May and November (this year starts Wed May 21 according to Nordstrom’s website, although the Wall Street Journal reported that it will be earlier this year than in the past),1/2 Yearly Sale for Men is mid-June and late December, Anniversary Sale -July (for more on Nordstrom sales from their website click here)

Bloomingdale’s – Big Brown Bag sales are once a quarter and range from 15-20% off when you use your Bloomie’s card — sources tell me the next one is Memorial Day weekend…

Macy’s – Many sales, seemingly all the time! These including the famous Thanksgiving Dale Sale, other One Day sales, Macy’s Home Sale, Memorial Day Sale, Labor Day Sale, Presidents Day Sale, Pre-Season Sale, and more… sorry I can’t be more specific here!

Saks – lots of events. Here’s some details: Beauty Week is 2x per year in April and October, Fragrance Week is early to mid-May, Big Sales in July and January, Triple Points Event at end of May, Friends and Family in late October, Designer sales a few times a year …. and a special plug for Trish McEvoy: they have a Master Class event (where they teach you how to do makeup the Trish way) on August 2, 2008 in select stores

Banana Republic, J.Crew, and Ann Taylor typically have a big sale at the end of each season to clear out the store before introducing new lines. Look for summer styles to go on sale near the end of June.

Thanks to Cec for some assistance on this post! Note: these may not be 100% accurate this coming year, but just a hunch/guidance from previous experience…
