Shop It To Me

Have you ever wondered about your favorite model’s eating habits or exercise routines? Probably! How about their favorite cocktail, guilty pleasure, or shoe preference? Hmm…maybe not.

Either way, you can find it all out and more at the recently launched, Modelinia– a website completely dedicated to fashion models. Whether you love to hate them, or hate to love them, it is certainly worth taking a peek! No, it will not leave you feeling more educated or fulfilled, but it certainly can provide you with a mid-day entertainment fix.

The site is flowing with up-to-date news on fashion, beauty, entertainment/lifestyle, and more – BUT, if you go there for one thing, do not miss the Model Matrix. This is here where you will find the inside scoop on the lovely, long-legged ladies!

The Los Angeles-based site was founded by executive producer of “Project Runway“, Desiree Gruber.  Featured models include Adriana Lima, Coco Rocha, Kate Moss, and of course, Gisele and Heidi!

So, who is your favorite fashion model?

Just when I thought Alexander McQueen could do no wrong, he went and made a shoe that looks like a foot. The shoe was featured in Elle this month. It’s eerily lifelike, with toenail indentations and all. Walking a mile in someone else’s shoes? Cool. Walking a mile in someone else’s feet? Kind of freaky. If I want to look barefoot, my own bare feet will do just fine.

When the stilettos first appeared in McQueen’s Spring 2009 collection, there were questions as to whether retailers would actually carry them.  Now they do! But be warned – the price tag is not for the faint of heart. They sell for $1,865 at Maxfield, L.A. Although I can’t find a website for the store, their number, address and reviews are on the Maxfield Yelp page. (Gotta love Yelp!)

Our Trendsetter Shopping’s My Cardio has great attention to detail when it comes to fashion and we’re always learning about amazing up-and-coming designers and trends in her blog. So, we’re delighted for her guest post on Oscars 2009 fashion. Enjoy her take on best and worst of the red carpet.

first, a little confession:  i’m actually writing this before the actual awards show has even started.  as a style writer, for me, the awards are beyond secondary – it’s all about the pre-game red-carpet festivities.  while the filmgoer in me is rooting loudly for kate winslet and sean penn to win (update:  they did!), the fashion critic in me really cares only about the looks strolling down the red carpet.

this year’s fashions provided much less fodder for complaint than in years past.  there were some really amazing looks, and only a handful that caused my inner fashion police siren to start screaming.  the vast majority of the looks were understated and classic – a nod, i’m sure, to the drama in the economy.  fortunately, a few stunning stars took it upon themselves to remind us of what we love about hollywood:  the escapism and glamour.

kate-winsletsjp

my favorite look of the evening was kate winslet, a perennial favorite of mine.  she never fails to deliver hollywood glamour in spades, and tonight was no exception.  her stunning gunmetal gown, by yves saint laurent, boasted an asymmetrical one-shouldered bodice and crisp belting at the waist. it dripped drama with a delicate and detailed black lace overlay.  i loved that she let the dress speak for itself – her only jewelry was a pair of classic drop earrings and a diamond bangle.

sarah jessica parker’s gown ran a very close second in my book.  her gown, by dior haute couture, was everything we’d expect from this fashion icon.  referring to the color of her gown as “barely mint,” parker simply radiated style and stardom.  the gold accents in the fabric, that fantastic belt, and the extravagant, floaty ball skirt were a perfect combination.  in a perfect world, i’d have covered her decolletage a bit more, but…

other winners in my book:   amy adams took the prize for best accessory, with her stunning fred leighton choker, and marisa tomei’s gown was museum-worthy in its gorgeous origami detailing (though i didn’t love how she carried it off).  and i loved the subtle detail on taraji p. henson’s gown – it was the perfect blend of elegance and drama.

freida-pintojessica-biel

of course, there’s nothing like a night of glitz and glamour to bring out the cattiness in fashion critics everywhere…present company included.  i freely admit i used to feel so badly for the stars who end up battered and bruised in the hindsight commentary from the fashion police.  but the more i’ve learned about this incredible industry, the more i realize that with all of the hours of planning, shopping, prepping and primping that go into putting a star on the red carpet, there’s just no excuse for the worst of the worst.

i was so excited to see what freida pinto would do with her oscar look – her lovely skin tone makes her an ideal candidate for bold, bright color, and showing off a little skin.  sadly, while the color was there, the skin wasn’t…and the asymmetrical bodice just didn’t work for me.  the whole thing was made worse by a single long sleeve made entirely of lace….just far too dowdy and old-fashioned for her hip, sexy vibe.

jessica biel’s was another look that really disappointed me.  with a figure like hers, the possibilities are endless.  so, unless she’s hiding a baby bump, there was little to explain away the gratuitous draping on the front of her gown.  but the real crime was her footwear – a black closed-toe pump with a cream column gown?  i would have loved to see a metallic shoe, and open-toe seems so obvious…i just have no idea what she was thinking.  add on a very lackluster half-up hairstyle, and the look just fell flat.

as for other misses, i wasn’t thrilled about miley cyrus’ over-the-top style, which just seemed to completely overpower her.  ditto for beyonce’s look, which i wanted to love at first glance.  but it’s no small feat to overpower someone like her (not to mention the fact that the gown was completely unflattering, adding at least a couple of hours to her hourglass figure).  and then there was mickey rourke…but really, i think the photo just speaks for itself.  just as well, as i was left speechless.

ultimately, this just wasn’t a year for shock and drama at the oscars.  but if you’re looking for trends to take to the bank, there was clear evidence that classic glamour is back, statement jewelry can make even a lackluster gown fabulous, and when in doubt – a belt provides instant structure and style to nearly any ensemble.  nothing we didn’t know before…but sometimes, a little validation is all you need.

Well, Project Runway is upon us, even though we don’t get to see it. The 3 final Project Runway contestants still showed at Fashion Week, even though the new season hasn’t aired. I long to be able to judge their collections based on a mix of their talent and my personal taste or distaste of their personality. But unfortunately, I know nothing about the designers and am forced to view their looks with an unbiased opinion. For shame!

I liked all 3 of the designers’ looks, but the 3rd was my favorite. The designer obviously had an affinity for oversized collars and the color black, and that’s an affinity I happen to share. Below are my two favorite pieces from each collection. You can check out all 3 collections via The Cut. Which is your favorite?

As if his ordinary styles are not enough to make women go wild, Christian Louboutin had to outdo himself once again with his very limited-edition, very amazing, Marie Antoinette inspired heels.

0203_christian-louboutin-lesage-heels_fa1

Saying these pretty shoes cost a pretty penny would be an understatement– but just look at them! Marie Antoinette, known for her lavish clothing and excessive lifestyle, would surely be proud. The heels, which will make their US debut at South Coast Plaza’s Christian Louboutin Boutique at the end of this month, are priced at $6,295-OH MY! If you live in the Southern California area and need an excuse to splurge (or you are just dying to get a look at these lovely Louboutins in person), the creator himself will be there to introduce his new collection, and sign shoes, on February 23. They will make their way to his Madison Avenue Boutique three days later.

Only 36 pairs of these museum-worthy heels will be created, and the shoes come with more than just the joy that accompanies wearing a work of art on your feet. Each pair will be individually stamped and numbered, come in a uniquely designed box, and will include a book illustrating Louboutin’s collaboration with Jean-Francois Lesage (embroider and creative partner for the collection).

Their frilly femininity, combined with that sexy edge that Louboutin’s classic red sole is famous for, makes these shoes très magnifique! I do realize that they may not rank very high up on the wearability scale, but that won’t stop me from gushing!

What do you think? Completely amazing or completely over-the-top?

Our Trendsetter and guest blogger, Stylist Amy Salinger has worked on some of the best shows in the business, from Oprah to What Not To Wear. When she’s not styling top-rated shows, she’s also a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper to everyday fashionistas. We love reading her blog Sass N Style for expert tips on building our wardrobe. In the spirit of awards season, she put together an Oscar-worthy outfit.  Hear it from her directly:

So awards season is in full swing and that can only mean one thing, gowns, gowns and more gowns! I live for the full blown morning coffee talk discussion over the best and worst looks of the evening before where Hollywood royalty put on their best face (and outfit) to shine on the red carpet. With the Oscars upon us, the biggest night of Hollywood’s fashion year is finally here!!!

As a fashion stylist, it is hard not to create what I believe are the best looks for the rich and famous prior to the actual big event. Seeing as I diligently receive my Salemail every day from Shopittome.com, I have no choice but to browse possible Oscar looks! Doesn’t everyone do this? I came across a beautiful floor length indigo gown by Laundry this week and my mind went bonkers. Demi Moore or Kate Beckinsale would look perfect in this simple, understated yet completely sexy dress. For me, style on the red carpet is about standing out in a fabulously elegant and royal way. This dress by Laundry only exemplifies that.

This is not to say that bringing in bold and fun jewelry is not the punch they need to truly stand out in a sea of lovely ladies. I chose bronze pieces to funk up the classic elegance of this floor length gown. Calvin Klein’s metallic clutch was the perfect fit for this flowing dress.

calvin-klein-clutch

It is the bit of hard edge that any classy lady needs to show she means business. Pairing it with this snake ring by Roberto Cavalli brings up the style quotient by ten fold.

Be sassy in your fashion choices and know that standing out on the red carpet doesn’t always mean choosing the most over the top option…. I am talking to you Bjork, a swan dress is never in!

Bandals or soots? Which one’s a better name for the sandal-boot hybrid that’s become commonplace? It’s unclear how it began. Maybe it was the gladiator shoes, or the peep-toe boots, or the resurgence of booties – but somewhere along the way the line between sandals and boots got blurred.

Here are a couple pairs of shoes I found in the sandals section of Nordstrom.com:

lamb-sandallinea-paolo-sandal

And here are some from the boots section:

jeffrey-campbell-boot

linea-paolo-boot

Is there anything that still distinguishes a boot from a sandal? And now that jumpsuits and bandals are in style, what’s next? Here’s hoping we keep the shoes and clothing separate. I don’t think anyone wants to see a return of the onesie.

Guest bloggers generally add some zing,  provide a new perspective and voice, and spice up a blog with variety.

Well I was excited to see this week’s guest blogger on the New York Times “The Moment” blog — none other than the esteemed Giorgio Armani.  It was a unique chance to hear a legendary designer speak in his own words, more elaborately than a two line quote, yet more succint than a full-blown biography.

In the most recent piece, Armani reflected on the opening of his new store, and $1 million donation to the Fund for Public Schools.  He recounted the evening’s events, which included a gourmet meal, elbow-rubbing with Hollywood starlets, and here — see for yourself in his own words–

“After it was all over, I could finally relax. So we hopped in the car and drove down to the Rose Bar at the Gramercy Park Hotel where Narciso Rodriguez was having his after-show party. I like Narciso very much. He asked to have a photo with me. Then Kanye West came over and we discussed the architect Claudio Silvestrin, someone I’ve worked with for many years. Kanye used Silvestrin to design his apartment in New York and said my stores were an influence for his choice. Guests from my dinner had also come down to the Rose Bar: Josh Hartnett, Elsa Pataky and Chace Crawford all came over to say thanks for dinner. Then we went to the club One Oak, where I saw Leonardo again. It seemed like all of New York was there; even Paris Hilton was at the next table over. I danced until 4 a.m. and then went home to bed. What an end to a fabulous trip to New York. See you next time!”

Must be a nice life, huh?!

To read more of Armani’s guest blogging (there are 4 posts), visit The Moment blog.  And, while you’re there, be sure to check out the amazing photo of the Armani store and the staircase inside.  Looks quite grand.
