In honor of the finale of Running In Heels that airs this Sunday (4/26), we’re giving away FIVE free 1-year subscriptions to Marie Claire magazine…and you could receive one!

On the series, we watched the Marie Claire interns as they endured moments of competitive cattiness, hob-nobbed with the stars and fashion elite, ran errands all over Manhattan, and learned the ins and outs of what it’s like to work at a fashion magazine. We admired their fashion and style sense, and chatted about whose outfits we’d most like to own, and what pressure it must be to work in such a fashionista-filled environment.

So the Running In Heels inspired contest? We’re giving away FIVE free 1-year subscriptions to Marie Claire magazine. For the chance to win, just leave a comment below with what you consider to be the greatest office fashion faux-pas! (And of course –we know you would never commit such a thing…only view it with your own two eyes!) We’re already excited to see the variety of responses (toilet paper stuck on stiletto heels, bra straps hanging out left and right…what else do you have in mind?)

We’ll pick the winners on May 1st so they can receive Marie Claire all year round!

In a professional workplace, the biggest fashion faux pas is to wear something that looks like it belongs more on a stripper/in a strip club than the office.
Wearing shorts that are too short and your booty hangs out the back. Yikes!
First let me say I have been a huge fan of Marie Claire since I started reading them in high school and they’re horoscope editor seemed to know my entire life and predict it’s exact outcome!! Would love love love a subscription to the mag. It’s been some time since I said hello to those lovely pages.
My office fashion faux-pas, or simply pet peeve, would be when a lovely pair of heels, worn with slacks, is completely ruined by a very poor sock choice, the worst being anything white or gasp, athletic looking. Although hidden most the day, those white toe holders can make a flash showing and shock any onlooker.

I can sum it up in one word…. CROCS!
my other pet peeve – when people write they’re instead of their – guilty
inappropriately short skirts. drives me crazy!
Too tight clothing.
wearing high water pants to work everyday and work for a dept store chain. These are not capri pants.

I have to say Samantha’s hair. That girl had some crazy do’s at times. Enough with the pushed forward crown.
Being an “Uggly Betty” is a totally fashion faux-pas!

Marie Claire is a diva must have!
I love your blog! It is awesome!
The biggest office fauxpas I think is when women dress as if they are going out on a night on the town. If their clothing is to revealing it distracts from the work at hand. (low-cut blouses, super high heels, too short skirts, etc.)
The biggest office fashion faux-pas would have to be wearing anything that is see-through enough where everyone can see what kind/color your underwear are!
Belly buttons and buttcracks showing in the office – yuchh!
Seamed pantyhose and open toe shoes! Tights and peep toes doesn’t really bother me, but that “tan” seam across a set of bare toes really does!
I think the biggest office fashion faux pas is coming to work looking like you don’t care what you look like. You know, the ‘rolled out of bed’ look. Frizzy hair (maybe in a pony tail), zero makeup, and an outfit that looks like you pulled it off your bedroom floor.
Shirts that are too tight and buttons pop.
And a pet one of mine is pantyhose with slides.
Any sort of undergarments showing

Outdated fashion! I have a co-worker who has plenty of modern outfits, but occasionally sports business suits from the ’80s — shoulder pads, dark paisley patterns and all.
Wearing clothes that do not fit leading to too much skin showing, undergarments completely exposed, and not leaving anything to the imagination.
The biggest office faux pas is still pantyhose with sandals! Saw it today and I wanted to cry.
Skirts or dresses that are too short!
Nothing is worse than wearing open toe shoes or sandals in the office and not having taken care of your feet. If you’re going to show them at least have them look nice.
Nothing looks more unprofessional than wearing skimpy clothes that would be appropriate attire to a strip club to the office. Anything with wrinkles or having that “worn out” look. Wear nothing that looks like an old hand-me-down!!
Bulges from too tight bras or underwear! Buy clothing according to what fits, not what the number is
I hate to see VPL or visible panty lines!!! I want to hug the women I see committing this crime!
I don’t know if anyone else would put this, but i think being too “office persona” would be a fashion faux pas. basically anything that causes you to look like a “working woman” from the 80’s!!
O.K. There is a fashion faux pas that drives me absolutley insane. That is when women wear high heel shoes where the heel part is missing and there is just a nail. You can hear those women walking miles away from you. Not to mention how dangerous it is to have metal exposed on a floor, slippy, slippy!
Thank you for this contest!!!
short skirts/dresses and halter tops.
i can think of several:
no bra
yardstick cleavage
slapping flip flops
slip showing
constant flaunting of t.h.o. (titty hard-on). this is tough to hide in freezing offices, but for the love of god WEAR A JACKET LIKE I DO.
I’m thinking it’s jeans, clearly college t-shirt, and worn-out running shoes, although it could be chalked up to being clueless. (And that’s one I’ve definitely done.)
My unintentional faux-pas, for both men and women, is too much perfume/cologne, especially if they do it over and over after being told about the strength of their smell.
Sorry to say, because Ive seen this WAY too many times, the biggest fashion faux pas at the office has been pantihose with no underwear under there. Ive seen, I saw just the other day, women walking out of the bathroom with their dresses, skirts, ect tucked into their pantihose and their booties are explosed. Not to mention constantly seeing them have runs AND nail polish dots to stop the runs from running further. Ridiculous!
Super, super tight and extremely low cut jeans!! Just not appropriate when meeting with clients!
Skirts too short and too-tight clothing are the worst. And sparkly clothing in the workplace is always a no, but I’ve seen it.
[...] win, click here and leave a comment on the Shop It To Me blog with your biggest office fashion faux-pas. Share [...]
Shear shirts with just a bra underneath. It gets under my skin for some reason.
There are so many! Here’s a few: Flip flops, frosted eye makeup, self tanner (reeks), blue, or purple nail polish (unless it’s hot and you’re in the fashion industry), capri pants, those weird stockings for thong shoes (a don’t in any office, ever) and finally the big one: visible cleavage whether boobies or butts. Ewwww!
I think when people dress like they are going to a night club, def.
I think too much cleavage is wrong. It’s great to have some, but please don’t over share…

[...] subscriptions to Marie Claire magazine. It’s simple, all you have to do is go to the Shop It To Me blog, and comment on what you consider to be the greatest office fashion faux-pas. And for all of us [...]
Skirts with way inappropiate slits in them.
Ive seen them worn many times in the office, and its just so not right.
Well a skirt with a split that fit’s so tightly that the split rips right up to the booty the first time the sit down was about the worst thing I have seen!
One of the worst things I’ve seen is people continuing to wear their size 6/8 clothes when there body is clearly much bigger than their clothes. Disgusting!
Bras and underwear that show, hands down. Besides that, it depends on the work environment. What works in one place won’t work in another. Good grooming is essential, no matter how lax the atmosphere is.
Big office faux pas would have to be wearing a white (almost see-through) blouse with a dark coloured lacy bra underneath when you have an important meeting!
Or.. too high, high heels with a tight skirt where you have to waddle like a penguin to get any where!
Definitely athletic shoes. Can’t stand them with trousers; even worse with dresses or skirts!
My fashion faux is strapless dresses. They make my huge boobs look like they are touching my knees. Lol.
Tight clothes!! The worst, black spandax on a woman that should only wear them at home.
Thanks
One of the biggest faux pas I’ve ever seen is someone coming to work totally unprepared for what her job description is and not understanding what office attire is. So she comes to work looking like she’s going to go hang out at the beach. She’s got on flip flops and a t-shirt with shorts – usually too short shorts. Or she may think that as long as she is wearing a dress that she’s safe. So she walks in with a sundress on and sandals. What do you do? You can send her home to change which would totally embarrass her, say nothing till later when you can catch her away from everyone else and explain the dress code or have a woman in her department speak to her about it. But actually that should have been covered in her orientation when she started the new job. It needs to be maintained also and not let some people slide on certain things and not afford others the same oppurtunity.
Please count me in!
Ill-fitting, dowdy, matronly outfits should be banned from every office!
Once had an dental hygienist come into the office for a full day of work with medical scrubs on and bright red STILETTO heels ——–and the worst was that she could not even walk in THEM——-
Tube tops.
VPL is the worst!!!
Thanks for the great giveaway!
I think the worst office faux-pas would be wearing open toed shoes with nasty feet! So many women in my office do this…go get a pedicure and then wear open toed shoes!
I also love the Running in Heels show…
Stains on clothes… except I’m guilty of this myself. I have tiny bleach stains on a pair of pants that I’m still wearing to work! LOL Somebody… give me a raise so I can buy some new pants!
Brown and Black – in the office, on the street – I just cannot accept it!
TIGHT – anything TOO tight – please don’t bother coming in!
Bra straps showing. I personally believe you should have anything sleeveless on at work anyway, but if you are, put on the right size bra!
I think the biggest fashion faux pas in a traditional office setting is wearing regular shorts, not even bermuda type just regular shorts especially denim.
Although I can think of many, I believe that ill fitted clothing with excessive amounts of skin exposed is a major faux pas in the office.
There are a few faux pas that I know would be an immediate insult. One is wearing clothing that is wrinkled. Two clothing that is too risqué for the office
Wearing pants that are too tight – seeing the “muffin-top”!
garlandofroses@gmail.com
Well now that it’s springtime I would have to say…
Ladies that wear sandals and have crusty heels, nasty toes or a worn out pedicure. Nobody wants or needs to see that, blech! Get thee a ped egg pronto!!
Too much cleavage, spiked hair and the use of black or extremely dark nail/toe polish and lipstick in the office is a no-no.
Heavy makeup and too tight clothing. You’ve gained weight and your slacks, skirt are too small. Worn down heels and scuffs and scrapes. Chipped nail polish.
athletic shoes and skirts!
Skimpy clothing! Too relaxed on Fridays.
Office cameltoe…not cute
To me the worst office fashion faux-pas is when people do not dress their age. I mean, I saw a 40+ woman wearing clothes from Charlotte Russe. REALLY? You know those are your daughter’s clothes and it’s nice that you ‘fit’ into them, but dress age appropriately and have some dignity for crying out loud.
Another fashion faux-pas is skimpy clothing. Are you going to the club after work or did you come straight from there to work? Invest time in a full-lentgh MIRROR and take a good look at yourself before you step into the office–or people like us will be writing about you as an Office Fashion Faux-Pas!
I can think of a few from my last office experience, but the one that ranks #1 is:
Wearing a house coat/mummu or matching sweatsuit-type-attire to work.
We had a few women that did this at work, granted, most of them were older, but that’s still no excuse. Horrible!
I work in a salon, so I see quite a few faux-pas. The stylist’s are allowed “artistic” freedom and sometimes they take it too far. I think the skimpy clothes and too-short skirts are the biggest mistakes though.
jessbedard7@gmail.com
wearing too tight, or see through clothes. not professional at all!
This lady that works with my mom is super skinny and thinks she is a teenager when she is actually like 60. Anyways she thinks she has to be with the trends going around. When I say she comes to work dressed like a stripper, it’s true because she usually does. Anyways she has discovered leggings and she will come to work wearing leggings with a short shirt. It’s awful. Somebody needs to seriosly stop this woman..lol
I think the most unprofessional faux pau you could commit is when you see the top of your bra from underneath the shirt. You know, like when there’s a little lace sticking up from inder the neckline…it’s just waaayyy too inappropriate.
Thanks for the giveaway!!
I work with guys who have to wear dress shirts every day and yes, I know they’re guys and all but still. IRON. and unironed dress shirt does not look dressy and professional. It looks like you forgot to change from yesterday!
LOVE marie claire! I was sad when I couldn’t renew my subscription this year due to budget cuts.
smg03170@gmail.com
The biggest office fashion faux-pas is when the women thongs are expose, when they sit down.
I am a third grade teacher and seeing another teacher dressed down (torn jeans or see thru shirts) is definitely a fashion faux-pas. I love the students and try to be a role model for our inner-city school. Thanks for the offer!
Being able to throw a quarter in that CRACK!! Yea, WE have seen that! !!!
[...] http://blog.shopittome.com/2009/04/22/free-marie-claire-subscriptions-comment-and-you-could-win/ [...]
It is a problem if people can see but crack. Doesn’t matter how fit, fat, skinny, sexy, chubby, etc, you are it shouldn’t be seen!
If you are going to wear open-toed shoes/sandals, get a decent pedicure! No one wants to see your cracked soles or nasty toenails!
I hate it when bra straps are showing or when they hang down!
The greatest faux pas is always being underdressed rather than over-. Leave the flannel at home…
Short skirts, too much cleavage, and men and women who take baths in their perfume!
In an office setting, no tight or too short clothing. No cleavage – leave you bustier at home and please wear appropriate underwear when sporting light colored slacks. Also, no big dangling earrings or super flashy jewelry!
Cleavage (up or down), VISIBLE THONGS (ugh!!), sneakers, visible bras (sheer clothing), too tight clothing, too short skirts, I could go on and on!
I really hate it when women wear way to much make up and when their clothing looks like it comes from the kids department. Not sexy at all!!!!
a. spaghetti straps
b. plunging necklines
c. flip flops
d. booty shorts
The worst that I ever saw in person was on an intern at the TV station where I work. She was wearing thigh length leggings with a wide band of lace at the bottom (looked like undergarments) and a short top that exposed a wide band of skin at her waist. She had the body for it, but that doesn’t mean that it’s ok to show it off at work. The men in the office could not concentrate on anything when she was in the room and the women were offended by her presence. Needless to say, the station re-issued their dress code and made sure all the interns received one. I think they may have been worried about a law suit resulting from her display.
The biggest office fashion faux pas is to have lipstick on your teeth !

I think a Big no-no is not wearing a bra at all, so not classy. And as for hygiene if your gonna wear a sleeveless anything have your armpits waxed or shaved goes for legs too! Always be presentable you represent your company you work for.
I think the worst fashion faux-pas is muffin tops. Come on ladies, break down and get yourself a new pair of pants that fit!
The greatest office faux pas is always wearing that one black jacket “that goes with everything” – even if it’s stained and wrinkled and outdated.
low cut tops
The biggest fashion faux-pas for me is when men or women don’t lint roll their clothing. You could be wearing the most fabulous black designer suit but if you have white cat hair all over it you look like you just don’t care.

Office and anywhere fashion faux paus – white pantyhose. Just don’t do it.
socks with sandles – horrible all the time
thong showing…bleuch :-/
WEARING OPEN TOED SHOES WITH BAD FEET.
40 year olds (and older) wearing mini skirts. Yuck.
i think the biggest is too much cleavage/boobage/nippleage!
Too tight clothing, too casual shoes (like crocs, birkenstocks, flip flops, etc) and ripped jeans. Seriously people, we’re working in a professional office!!!!
I hate when women/girls wear flip-flops EVERYWHERE! They really shouldn’t be worn out of the house for most people – yeah I know they are comfortable but so are my pj’s and I don’t wear those to work either.
Smudged mascara!
Too tight clothing- boobs popping out- etc- or mixed outfits like a miniskirt with a business jacket
Definitely the thong-upon-sittin, office faux pas. it’s the worst!
I think mini skirts are the worst! You should be able to bend over without showing everything!
……..wearing belly bareing shirts, or having your thong above you pants or skirt; a big faux pas
Thanks
The greatest fashion faux pas I have seen is when women wear VERY low cut tops – we are talking falling out of them – to the office. That ruins a perfectly nice suit or outfit and does not help one to be taken seriously in the workplace.
what other then a crisp white skirt wore over a frilly g-string, turning see through in office lights, ahhhh classy

Showing to much skin, be it cleavage, thighs, bellies or butts.
Definitely pantyhose with the sandles also this isnt fashion but hate when people clip their nails at their desk!!! GROSSSS
I would have to say wearing anything too revealing (really mini skirt) or showing too much cleavage. Very tacky!!
Too much cleavage, too tight clothing, flip flops, casual jeans, spaghetti straps, provocative clothing in general!
These don’t belong in an office.
Wearing flip flops
Wearing clothes more suitable for a cocktail party
VPL!!! Especially when the clothes are too tight. So not attractive trying to fit 10lbs of potatoes in a 5 pound bag.
office fashion nono according to me would be : very short tight skirts and showing too much clevage
I’ve worked with too many people who thing casual Friday means flip-flops, sweats and a t-shirt. Yikes!
Too much perfume or cologne, ugh!

Wearing flip flops to the office… even in Hawaii!
Mine’s the copycat. That sneaky little girl who comments nonchalantly on your delectable new pencil skirt, “Oh that’s cute, where’d you get it?” And once you tell her the secret, hidden find store where you snapped up that little beauty, she shows up next week in the same one!
You better hold the clandestine cache where you bought those new Pour la Victoire pumps at half off close to your chest honey, if you dont’t want the CopyCat trotting around in them tomorrow.
flip flops are pretty awful!
Super low cut shirts! I actually worked with a (OLD) man who thought he was oh-so-sexy and wouldn’t button his shirts past mid stomach. He kept getting written up but thought he was too good looking for it to matter. Ugh!
Tiny skirts! Oy.
I read every comment and can I just say, ALL OF The ABOVE? My comment may not win the prize for me but I want to congratulate everyone who commented on having good fashion sense and good taste!
A black bra and a white top, thanks.
Showing your bra–whether it be the bra straps, the top of the bra because your shirt is too low, or the bra through your shirt because it is too sheer or the bra is the wrong color. Everyone’s eyes will be on your bra all day long!
THE office faux-pas : wearing super killer vinyl high heels in which you can’t walk (or walk like a robot) and that are definitely not suitable for the office… Fetish night ok but work… come ooonnn NO!!
One of the greatest office faux-pas for women is to wear inappropriately tight, short, low-cut, or otherwise skanky attire. My Hubbs worked in gov’t with a woman who was in her late 40’s and totally gave off a cougar vibe with her leopard-print, low-cut, tight tops and equally-tight and short skirts with vampy high heels. Ugh.
For men, one major office faux-pas is to wear any button-up shirt undone at the top two or three buttons, allowing their disgusting gray chest hairs to poke through. Nobody wants to see that. Wax it or button up!
Low tops and short skirts! This is an office…not the club!
I think showing too much of your body — or wearing flip flops would definately be fashion faux-pas!
Wearing clothes that are to tight or to short drives me crazy!
tishajean@charter.net
Wearing glasses with gold chain that holds the glasses on so they dangle on your chest when you aren’t wearing them. You look like grandma, they are tasteless and apparenetly you are too senile to remember where your glasses are.
next- pant suits- they don’t work on hillary clinton, they won’t work on you.
next- tattoos that show up on your legs or gasp, arms that are so inappropriate- damn they are unsightly.
unwashed hair is troubling
clothing that looks like it was popular when Eisenhower was President. Remember Eisenhower?
the list goes on but I am late for a body wax.
The two “no-nos” that I see most commonly are too much cleavage and open toed sandal-like shoes.
Wearing too much perfume!!!! This is by far the worse thing you can do!!
I would have to say one of the largest fashion faux pas for the office would be chipped nail polish, along with sweat stains under the armpits. Quelle horror!
Amber
Ambersmouthwash.blogspot.com
Wearing sexy nightclub clothes to the office.
Anything see through is the worst!
Wearing your “clubbing” clothes to work.
Paying too much for clothing that is really poor quality.
Clothes that have obviously not been laundered.
cleavage is inappropriate at work.
Keep the girls buttoned up, ladies. Iron your clothing (or use the dry cleaner for pressing) so you don’t look like a disheveled mess. Don’t wear slippers at your desk (ugh!). Keep the 6″ heels at home. And please, please, please, men, wear socks with your shoes.
Definitely showing to much skin!! To much cleavage & to much leg can be a huge distraction!
Coming to work without a bra! It’s actually beyond faux-pas. More like fashion terrorism!
tooooo much clevage!!!!
ahdrad2932(at)msn(dot)com
Wearing clothes that are clearly too tight and too small, letting your underwear show(even if it is just thong straps thats even more gross)
Really low cut tops or dresses. Everytime you bend over it is peep show time.
OMG – White professional workshirt with dark colored bras underneath OBVIOUSLY trying to draw attention. So distracting for both sexes
mega cleavage! so inappropriate!
Shorts that are way too short and too much clevage is horrible.
I still see gals wearing black panty hose to work!!
Slippers in the workplace is always a recipe for disaster. A coworker of mine always would come in very professional looking, with a cute outfit, usually wearing heels. As soon as she got to her desk though she would change into these horribly old and ratty slippers that left bits of fluff wherever she walked. She should have learned her lesson the first time when one of the slippers got stuck in the elevator door, but she didn’t. Just last week she was shuffling about in a cute white suit with a large cup of coffee. She didn’t see a bump in the rug, and now shes out one white suit, and the slippers are finally gone.

oh i hate it when people wear crocs and think thats appropriate! or I did see a man in a pair of tennis shoes the other day and I couldn’t help but stare – not business casual
The biggest faux pas at my work is middle age women wearing white tights. They are like Crocs, only cute on little girls.
I think women who dress like that in the workplace make their co-workers feel awkward and uncomfortable, it’s not the place to dress like that
Showing too much skin!
When someone is just plain lazy and wears whatever to work. You can totally tell they didn’t even think about what they were going to wear and just grabbed anything. Most of the time it’s two clashing patterns (particularly floral ones). It looks horrendous!
It really bothers me when people especially young can not keep up with fashion, my co-worker is about 21 and she dresses like she’s 50 and can’t seem to buy clothes that fit, all of her pants are too short and sleeves on her shirts are really tight, how uncomfortable.
also….I work at a bank and it specifically says no low cut shirts NO cleavage and half the girls here show off what they have it’s disgusting, I’ve got it too but I don’t flaunt it!
Wearing clothes that are too tight and / or show too much skin.
low cut crap…there was even a coworker who complained our new workshirts were too formal and she wanted to unbutton them to expose her cleavage.
I would love the chance to win, thanks.
If there are any body parts hanging out that shouldn’t be.
Suits on grown men that seemed to have come right out of the little boys’ Husky department.
Wearing short shorts!
Mini-skirts that are way to mini…
Shorts, too tight clothes, see through tops, bra strap showing, jeans with holes in them.
Cleavage!
Okay….. I HATE when people wear clothes that show the name brand and then they have like 5 different things on them that not only show the name brand, but are different brands.. that dont even go together. i.e. Roca Wear, Gucci, Chanel, and Baby Phat ALL on the same person at the same time.
It’s disgusting. Ew.
fingernails that have designs or bright paterns on them
How about clear blouses with black bras.. purple, hot pink.. you name it lol.

Wearing a see through blouse.
When did flip flops become business attire. I can see a dressy sandal, but old rubber flip flops? Be serious.
Trying to wear junior clothes when you have not been a “junior” in a while.
The greatest fashion faux pas in the office (to me) is anything too revealing. Things that are too short or too low cut are totally inappropriate.
CROCS must die! (Might as well be wearing your house slippers. And a ratty old bathrobe. Come into work with your hair in rollers.)
when the skirts are too short and the top is too low.
flip flops
wearing no bra or panties and it can be seen that they arent there :0
VPL- visible panty lines. SPANX people..
Showing clevage-plunginh necklines
the greatest office fashion faux pas are shirts that are see through.
madamerkf at aol dot com
panty lines and too short skirts
Forgetting that the office isn’t a social event… glittery clothes, too much cleavage, heavy or glittery make-up, etc
Wearing too much perfume.
Wearing..black on black on black on black…YUCK
I think wearing clothes that are too revealing is the greatest office fashion faux-pas.
Not sure if someone said this already b/c so many posts; but Higher-ups always look down…at your feet! Shoes are important, and for open-toe/heel shoes, your feet need to be taken care of! Tore up heels are hideous and nasty toes need to be dealt with. You may not be able to afford pedicures, God knows I can’t anymore, but you can still take care of your feet! Exfoliate, trim & moisturize!
The biggest fashion faux-pas in the office is having your thong hanging out of your pants/skirt/shorts! No one wants to see that!
very nice blog..coll info
Wearing pants so tight that you can see an outline of the person’s private area along with the color of their panties.
