Shop It To Me

FashionpulsedailySince we’re based in San Francisco, we weren’t able to make it to Lucky Shops in New York this year. Lucky for our Trendsetter Julia Dinardo of Fashion Pulse Daily, she got to put our tickets to use! Here Julia fills us in on all the glorious details of the event, from free cocktails to $50 Manolos. Special thanks to our Trendsetter Laura of Lollie Shopping for letting us repost this inside peek into the experience.

Although I’ve been in New York City for over 10 years, I’ve never gone to Lucky Shops before, and I can tell you this – I’ve definitely been missing out! Thanks to the gracious Laura/LollieShopping, I was able to attend the fourth annual Lucky Shops event this year, and I can tell you this — all of the coveted brands were there, from Rebecca Minkoff to Foley + Corinna, See by Chloe, Robert Rodriguez, Bing Bang, and more.

Free fruity drinks and tiny, adorable appetizers swirled around me and BFF Allison, trying to decide what booth to check out first. We got a lipstick color match at the Maybelline Color Sensational Booth (my perfect shade is Pink Peony, Allison’s is a shade of mauve), and then headed down the aisles for some serious shopping action. The aisles seemed to be largely grouped into categories, with most of the lingerie, shoes, accessories, clothes, and jewelry in their own respective area. We  particularly loved the concept of the jeanius bar, that had a variety of popular jeans from JBrand, Paige, and more, with free hemming available on site.

We were glad to see a Shop for Success booth with the proceeds going toward charity, ooed and awed over the jewelry baubles, and cried over the beautiful handbags from our favorite designers. There were definitely bargains to be had, with a lot of items marked down around 50% off, and we even found a brand new pair of Manolos for $50 at Dress for Success. Overall, overwhelming thumbs up, and you better believe I will be back doing some intense shopping and martini sipping next year!

My mailbox has been overflowing in the recent weeks with various holiday catalogs, gift guides, and direct mail offers.  Seems that too often, retailers throw a bunch of items together and try to present a gifting story that will resonate with shoppers.  But the items selected often don’t strike the right balance — they are either inexpensive but look that way too (!), or are out of reach in terms of the $$ you’d realistically spend on most of the people you give to.

NordgiftguideNordstrom this year seemed to hit it right.  Flipping through the Nordstrom “Gifts We Love” green gift guide this week, I was actually very impressed by their efforts.  The first 10 pages or so focused on items under $100.  They still incorporated elevated brand names, and showcased products that seemed covetable.  For example, makeup from Nars, Bobbi Brown, and Lancome, leather goods from Kate Spade, and Hanky Pankys.  Warm yet stylish jackets from Calvin Klein at $88 seemed like quite a steal!  Converse sneakers made of sequins (all the rage) , and a variety of sunglasses from Marc by Marc Jacobs and Juicy Couture for $98.

NordVertical2

I believe it wasn’t until page 54 or so that the items started to cost more than $100 — and then included higher end handbags, full-length shots of entire outfits, Tory Burch flats, Ugg boots, and more.  The gift guide ended with a Men’s section that also included palatable prices for shoes, sweaters, and cufflinks/wallets.

NordHoriz2

All in all, I was impressed with what Nordstrom put together.  It was a visually pleasing look at the variety of products they are offering this holiday season, and even more so – at compelling prices.  It didn’t feel like I was overwhelmed with luxury items and the required 2 page spread on items under $100 — but rather the opposite.  The guide was heavily weighted toward affordable luxuries, with a handful of higher end goods peppered in to give it some wow.  Kudos, Nordstrom!

While the malls and parking lots are crazy across the nation, many of us find pleasure in shopping while in PJs, still overly stuffed from last night’s Thanksgiving feast.  I happen to be one of them!

Today, I’m using the Shop It To Me Sale Spot to sift through the many many deals that online retailers are offering.  Shop It To Me has done the work, and identified well over 27,000 items from across the web that are on sale.

Tiffany f24karatstylerom 24Karat Style is here to show you how to spice up your winter look by combining items you already own! It’s time to pull out those dresses, tights, and boots.  Be sure to check Tiffany’s site – a full service personal wardrobe styling company providing unique and customized styling experiences along with a fun and informative fashion blog.

It’s that time in the season, where you are out “supposedly” shopping for others, and you start to feel like you need everything you see! “But I have no clothes…” seems to be a statement I hear all the time, but with all the Salemail you receive I find that hard to believe. All you need to do is pair together pieces of your wardrobe differently to make them fresh and exciting.

One of the easiest categories is dresses. Most of us wear dresses on a regular basis. Although there is a chill or perhaps a dead on freeze in the air if you are in the northeast like me, a dress makes a great base for a winter ensemble when paired with boots. The possibilities are simply endless when you throw some great hosiery into the mix!

BootswDresses1

The way to achieve this look without looking like a novice is making sure your dress and boots balance each other. If your dress is simple (as in basic color, uncomplicated silhouette and little to no embellishments) like in this first photo- then you have the opportunity to bring it to life with a more interesting pair of boots like these military inspired ones. Complete this look with a little bit of color from your leg wear and a cozy sweater if your dress doesn’t have any sleeves.

BootswDress2

Flat boots are one of my favorite ways to feel comfortable and yet, still look polished and put together. There are a lot of great over the knee boots out right now as well as some pretty wild flat printed boots. Don’t be intimidated by the different patterns, textures and colors because they are the perfect compliment to your basic little black dress! When working with color and pattern make sure you repeat one color throughout your outfit so things stay cohesive such as the repetition of black in this look.

bwd3

Put your pumps to the side and breathe some life into your party dresses by working a pair of edgy ankle booties into your look. No matter what style party dress you are working with, if it has some sass then booties are the way to go. A simple but chic bootie in an aged suede or a patent leather gives your style a modern attitude while still being playful, which is what we all want from a party dress… isn’t it?!

Now open your eyes and see what your wardrobe truly has to offer! Mix and match, think outside the norm and emerge a new woman with an abundance of style.

Trend alert! Scarf + hood = snood.

snood

From left: Burberry Knit Fur Snood, Missoni Rib-knit Snood, Staring at Stars Open Knit Snood, Topshop Zig Zag Snood

Snoods, ranging in style and price (from $32 to $1695), have been flying off the racks! I think it’s definitely a chic spin on the scarf-with-grungy-hooded-sweatshirt look. And they can be worn so many ways! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for snoods in my Salemail…

Don’t feel badly if you order a few items for yourself when you are shopping for gifts this holiday season.

Our just-completed Holiday Shopping Trends survey revealed that you aren’t the only one. In fact, 82% of the 8000 respondents to the survey told us they plan on buying something for themselves this holiday season while they are buying gifts for others.

Survey respondents also told us that, while they are opening their wallets a bit wider than last year, they are still looking for bargains. Here are a few of the other survey findings:

• Two-thirds of men and half of women say there’s nothing for which they will pay full price. But, among those who will pay full-prices, shoes and boots come in at the top of the “splurge” list.

• Shipping charges are not popular: 80% of shoppers refuse to pay more than $10 for shipping and 20% expect shipping to be free.

• The majority of shoppers say they avoid gift wrap charges by ordering items shipped unwrapped and then wrapping themselves before giving.

For all the details, download our Holiday shopping trends press release.

In a time wheWorkchicre casual work-wear is not only for Fridays, it’s important to remember that looking professional can be a key to success. Overdressed is still better than under-dressed, especially when it comes to impressing your boss! WorkChic is here to share a few tips on how to look fashionably sharp, and what styles are best for you. Be sure to check out their blog for outfit suggestions, fit guidelines, and tips and tricks on how to look professional, feminine, and chic.

Many of us no longer need to wear suits or even blazers into the office. There are times when a more professional image is important. For instant when meeting a new client or pitching a big idea. Hopefully these meetings are planned and you have a chic go to outfit. What happens when a last minute meeting pops up? The CEO wants an update on your latest project, but your everyday business casual just doesn’t feel right. You want to command a presence in this meeting. If you had a go to blazer hanging in your office, you’d be all set! We’re not talking about keeping any old blazer around, but one that fits your body and will look chic with many different outfits. Here’s what we recommend:

blazer1

While black may seem like an obvious choice, we would recommend selecting a style in stone or khaki. These shades can go with black, navy, brown, and many others making it much more versatile then black. The styles we selected above are ideal because they stop at the hip. A one button blazer is better for small and petite frames. While the second style has a higher stance and princess seams for curvier silhouettes.

blazer2

Charcoal would be our second choice and is more universal this time of year. This can be a matte color like the 2 button version on the left, or a softer heather charcoal grey or melange wool. The three button style has a flattering shawl collar that will allow you to showcase your blouse underneath.

If you tend to wear a lot of black, then that is the shade you should buy. Otherwise stick to a tan, stone, or charcoal option to get the most use out of this item. Take advantage of the holiday sales and make sure you get your wardrobe ready for the unexpected. Pick up a go-to blazer today!
