US - UK Clothing and Shoe Size Conversion Chart

Fashion and styling can be a confusing topic. What is your personal style? Which shirts pair perfectly with which skirts? And what is the perfect cocktail or party dress? When it comes to styling, there’s a lot of questions and a lot of complex answers. BUT one thing you can get a certain answer to is sizing.

Sizing changes from American to British or European, which can complicate things slightly. But there are definitely specific answers to this (see our chart below), which, once you’ve nailed, means you can purchase high street and designer clothing like boyfriend jeans or mini dresses from all over the world without a problem or the need to buy multiple sizes.

If you’ve ever let questions about international sizing stand between you and the clothes you really want, here’s where that comes to an end.

When it comes to shopping internationally, you might be thinking, oh this isn’t for me.

However, when it comes to shopping designer and high street deals on Shop It To Me, you could well find yourself falling in love with fashion pieces from the likes of Moncler or Zimmermann or AllSaints, where the sizing and shipping come from the UK or Europe.

OR - Maybe you've found the perfect dress from a UK brand and are just checking which size to buy??? Remember to sign up and search for it on Shop It To Me and check if we can't find you a better price right now!

Women’s Clothing Size Conversions US to the UK

Starting with women’s clothing sizes, it’s pretty simple in general when you get the hang of it. As you can see in the chart below, the US size is 2 sizes smaller than the UK size. For example, if you need a US women’s size 12, you would need to order a UK women’s size 16. For a US women’s size 18, this would be a UK women’s size 22. Simple, right?

Check out the size chart to make you’ve got the right sizes in mind if you’re planning to order anything that runs in UK sizing.

When it comes to items, such as jeans, that run with waist sizing rather than 4,6,8, the sizing is the same in the UK as in the US. Again, with high-end designers, all sizing tends to run slightly smaller than high street brands.

When brands list sizing as S, M, L (small, medium, large), you can assume that this runs pretty much the same as US brands, unless stated otherwise by the brand itself.

Women’s Shoe Size Conversions US to the UK

Women’s shoe sizes differ dramatically when it comes to the UK and US conversion, so always make sure you’ve got this right before you order.

The size difference is 3 sizes between UK and US for women’s and the UK is the smaller of the two. So, for example, if you need a US women’s size 6, this would be a UK women’s size 3. If you need a US women’s size 9, this would be a UK women’s size 6. This is exactly the same for half sizes, so if you’re a 6.5 in the UK, it’s simply a 3.5 in UK. Sorted?

See the below size guide for a super clear diagram of each size and what the UK equivalent is that you would need to order.

Men’s Clothing Size Conversions US to the UK

We don’t want to leave the guys out here so let’s make sure we cover the US to UK men’s sizing too.

Sizing for men for US and UK couldn’t be simpler. It’s all the same! From casual to formal wear such as sportcoats and blazers , the neck sizing, sleeve length and jacket sizing (also known as chest size) all work in just the same way.

The shoe sizes for men do differ, so take a look below if you’re in the market for a pair of UK sized men’s shoes.

Men’s Shoe Size Conversions US to the UK

It’s really easy when it comes to converting men’s shoe sizes from US to UK sizing. Just go down one size from US to UK and you’re there. For example, US men’s shoe size 6 would be a UK men’s shoe size 5. A 13 would be a 12. Simples.

Check out the chart below to get your correct size.

Kids Clothing and Shoe Size Conversions (Girls and Boys)

When it comes to shopping for your little ones, you’ve got to get the sizing right. This might seem tricky at first as the two nations do classify their sizing differently, but once you’ve realized how it works, it couldn’t be easier.

The US list children’s clothing 4,5,6, whereas the UK list in ages 4 years, 5 years, 6 years. However, you don’t have work anything out here, because the US simply don’t add the word years. But it still works the same way! So, if you need UK 4 years, choose US 4 or you need US 5, choose UK 5 years. And you’re done.

Check the chart below to confirm.

When it comes to kid’s clothing that’s listed as XS, S, M, you might need to refer to the chart below a little more closely to make sure you’ve got the right size you’re looking for.

Finally, when it comes to kid’s shoes, just like men’s sizing, the shoe sizes differ by just one. For examples, if you need a US kid’s size 3, you’d choose a UK kid’s size 2. If you’re looking for a US kid’s size 7, grab yourself a UK kid’s size 6. See the shoe size chart below for full clarification.

We’ll do another blog about the sizing differences between US and European sizes, so stay posted for that (if your favorite brand is French or Italian!) but for today, we just wanted to focus on the US to the UK sizing.
