Why wear two pieces, when you can wear one?
Playsuits aren’t just for kids. They are, in fact, this summer’s must-have piece. A great substitute for a dress, a romper or jumpsuit is your ticket to carefree warm weather style. Read on for the lowdown on this season’s hottest trend . . .
What is the difference between a romper and a jumpsuit?
Rompers are generally strapless, short sleeved or long sleeved on top, combined with shorts on the bottom. Jumpsuits for women usually combine long pants with any variety of top. They are not to be confused with overalls, which are usually denim, and tailored more like jeans.
Where did the trend come from?
Rompers and jumpsuits are both one-piece garments that combine a top and bottom into one outfit. Traditionally created for babies and children as playsuits or onesies, women started adapting the look around the beginning of the 20th century. The inspiration was the ease of a dress, combined with the functionality of shorts or pants, which made the one-piece suit perfect for active wear or sportswear.
Where can I wear my rompers and jumpsuits?
Rompers and jumpsuits come in a variety of styles. They may be loose fitting and flowy, or cinched at the waist for a more polished look. Some one-piece outfits come in lightweight fabrics, with unstructured cuts, making them most appropriate for activities like the beach, pool or farmers market. Still others are tailored and/or belted and look more like a cocktail dress or formal gown with pants instead of a skirted bottom. These can be appropriately styled for a party or wedding.
How should I style my romper or jumpsuit?
Depending on the occasion and your choice of romper or jumpsuit, you can select from a variety of accessories. A casual romper would pair well with a big hat, sandals, and a tote. A structured jumpsuit for a more formal affair can be styled much like a dress with heels or wedges, and a clutch.
