What’s Our Decade’s Signature Style?

People have often said fashion repeats itself, and that couldn’t be more true at the moment. For the past couple years, the focus has been on the return of the ‘80s. But right now we’re seeing strong influences from a lot of different decades, all reborn in a modern way.

Fringe flapper dresses and bob haircuts are everywhere, a clear throwback to ‘20s fashion. Trendhunter Magazine noted the swinging 1940s influence in Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2009 RTW collection. You can’t open InStyle or People Magazine or right now without seeing a reference to hippie ‘60s boho chic.

The current co-existence of all the different decades of fashion makes me wonder what people will consider to be the signature style of the 2000s in the future. It’s hard for me to step back and see a unifying theme. It’s also difficult for me to imagine a time when a lot of today’s styles may no longer look chic. But then again, I can only guess that’s how Stylist Leah Feldon felt when she chose this photo for her 1982 book Dressing Rich: A Guide to Classic Chic for Women with More Taste than Money. Styles change — let this be a reminder to us all.

Hawaiian Costume Party!

Everyone has been to a Hawaiian themed party at some point.

Take a look at this Men’s shirt found in a recent Salemail — it would be perfect for this type of extravaganza. But then look at the price-tag — even on sale, that’s one pricey costume!

Mmm…Dresses!

I happen to be one of those people who adore food. I also adore fashion, and occasionally these two interests combine into quirky thoughts — like this post. Inspired by P. Kim at All That & A and Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere, here are my Salemail picks that remind me of my favorite summer foods.

Can’t you just see this dress as the fabric interpretation of the push-up pop? Unfortunately, ice cream trucks don’t go driving down the street selling dresses, but if they did, this structured but still whimsical piece would make hot days much more bearable.

Trina Turk ‘Nanna’ Dress
Reg $238.00

Now $141.90

And here we have the sartorial equivalent of bruschetta. With the stylized punch of garlic and olives, but the simple elegance of tomato red, this DVF dress helps you look stunning without the effort – just like the dish itself.

Diane von Furstenberg ‘Mosie’ Two Pocket Dress
Reg $325.00

Now $161.90

And finally, a perennial picnic table favorite: watermelon. Strapless but still no fuss, this summer dress does watermelon one better – not only does is it completely seedless, but it also has pockets!

Susana Monaco Pocket Tube Dress
Reg $154.00

Now $115.50

Happy shopping (and snacking!)

“Evil geniuses…”

We love hearing from our Shop It To Me subscribers. Be it brand recommendations, suggestions for new features, or about the new trends you’re discovering and purchasing through your Salemails, continue to send these ideas our way! You can comment on the blog or send us thoughts directly to feedback@shopittome.com…we love hearing it all!

This week, Julie Raimondi, the Editor-In-Chief of Brides Local magazines dropped us a note that we got a kick out of, and we thought you would too!:

“You are evil geniuses. Brilliant horrible people. I now spend way more money but way less time. But since I never would have found those Alexis Bittar earring I’ve been wanting for 50% off without your terribly fabulous technology, I have indeed told everyone I know to sign up. Let’s just hope it doesn’t work as well for them or we’ll all go broke.”

Shopping! The Musical

This past Saturday night, I attended “Shopping! The Musical” in Union Square, San Francisco. I left underwhelmed with the performance, but entertained by many of the true-isms presented about shopping.

I don’t want to spend time detailing the amateur performance, but most definitely agree with Richard Connema’s review that said, “…parodies are not political but more a social commentary on the art of shopping. Everyone who sees the revue will identify with some aspect of shopping.”

A few of my favorite scenes:

- “Shopping With My Wife” – highlighted the difference between the way Men and Women approach grocery shopping. Her with a set and specified checklist of items she came for, very deliberate and particular. Him with a browsing mentality of whatever looks great, catches his eye, or a new offering. Together, they compliment one another well to fill the fridge!

- “Department Store Blues” – reflected the poor customer service given today, and how we are often countered with lines like “today is my first day”, “I’m helping another customer now”, or “You can check at another store if you want”…

- “Click” — ONLINE SHOPPING!!! This scene detailed the glory of shopping at the 3am hour and being addicted to buying via the internet. It’s so easy to just click click click!

- “Purchase Interruptus” – The agonies of waiting in line behind a slow lady at the store who has insane requests of paying in multiple transactions, price-checking merchandise, and more…all while you’re holding melting ice cream!

So — overall, a humorous take on the experience of shopping, but left the viewer with much to be desired in terms of the acting ability, set, and professionalism of this performance!

Hysterical video!

I first came across this hilarious video in the Wall Street Journal blog Buzzwatch. I was amazed by the talent of these guys when jumping into their pants — and watched in amazement. Then I found out it’s part of Levi’s 501 campaign…and has been spreading like wildfire!

These guys do gymnastic-like moves…but I must say that I am much more familiar with other tricks to squeeze into pants (can anyone say jeans that are fresh out of the dryer?!?!) Most well-known moves are probably laying on the bed and kicking your legs in the air, squats or lunges around your bedroom, etc etc etc…

Just sit back and watch!
