Q: You’re such a fashion gal — give us a behind-the-scenes understanding of you!  What 4 items do you not leave home without (what’s in your handbag each and every day)?

A: My must-have’s:

  • Stila Lip Glaze in Grapefruit- the most perfect, glossy sheer pink. I love the light, fresh scent and it is just sticky enough to last but not so sticky as to be uncomfortable.
  • Blackberry Bold- I am obsessive about checking my email and recently became totally addicted to Twitter. I take pics of my favorite fashion and beauty finds and tweet about them.
  • Darphin Aromatic Renewing Balm- The smell is delicious, and when I look down before a meeting and notice I forgot to get a manicure, I massage it into my cuticles for an instant one! Then, when I find myself on a long flight, I already have it packed and can pull it out to slather on my face so I arrive at my destination glowing.
  • Smythson of Bond Street Note Pad- I think that these are so chic, they make me WANT to take notes when I have ideas which is a good thing because if I didn’t, I would forget everything! I always have it out when reading magazines because I take notes on the items I find and fall in love with and want to learn more about.

Q: What’s your favorite brand right now this Fall?

A: Oh my, where do I begin? For shoes, I am obsessed with Pour la Victoire. Jeans- all about J Brand. Loving everything from Elizabeth & James and for accessories, Dannijo makes the most amazing statement pieces that add a perfect amount of edge to the girly pieces in my closet.

Q: When it comes to Shop It To Me, what’s your favorite feature?

A: My favorite feature is the Sale Spot- even though I get my salemails daily, there are some weeks that are so crazy busy I don’t get to look at them as closely as I would like. So, I make a point to check out the Sale Spot every Friday just to be sure I haven’t missed anything!

Q: Whose celebrity style do you most admire?

A: I really love how Nicole Richie dresses- always looks effortless, eclectic and perfectly accessorized. And lately I have been very into Diane Kruger’s style- very polished and feminine but kind of edgy at the same time.

Q: And finally — being a New Yorker, what are your favorite restaurants in the Big Apple?

A: Food- my second favorite topic after fashion!  Mara’s Homemade (www.marashomemade.com) is THE BEST- a hidden gem where my husband and I go for delicious barbeque, yummy oysters, amazing crawfish and, my Achilles heel- Mara’s insanely good bread pudding. I also love the new Standard Grill- great burgers and people watching- and for a special occasion, Mas (farmhouse) in the West Village. Oh- and if you are a pizza lover, Vezzo can’t be beat.

Update Your Look with Monochromatic Style!

naimascloset1Think red pumps can’t be paired with red pants, a red shirt, and an accompanying red blazer? Think again! It’s not always easy to pull off, but when done correctly, a monochromatic ensemble can scream chic. Naima’s Closet – all about style, shopping, and fashionable events – is here to help you rock this look, with a few tips and things to consider before taking the plunge.

The visual illusion that a monochromatic outfit can create is a slimmer, longer body line by moving the eye down the body, from head to toe, featuring one color. Don’t think of an outfit all in one color as bland and boring, consider it a fashion challenge with the best benefits of making you look great and making you feel great in your clothes. Check out these five tips for a slimmer look (without exercise) to style the perfect monochromatic outfit for you.

Four sizzling celebrity looks in this Fall’s must-have color

Texture

Clothing pieces with texture add visual interest and tactile appeal when you style an outfit in one color. Don’t be afraid to mix cashmere and leather or cotton and wool. Texture adds interest to your finished look.

Layers

Generally, layered outfits look more put together. All of the layers in an outfit enhance your style while matching the pieces stays simple in just one color.

Don’t be afraid to tweak

Fashion is fun and style is personal, so don’t be afraid to tweak the rules a bit. Monochromatic can mean one color, but consider being daring and mixing up an outfit by using different hues of the same color. A mix of shades can be appealing and figure flattering as well.

Use visual tricks

With a monochromatic palette, it becomes easier to use visual fashion tricks because you don’t have to worry about matching patterns. Playing with an outfit’s proportions can create a slimmer, camouflaged body line. Fashionable visual trickery is all about the cut, tailoring, or style of an item and using one color makes the outfit look pulled together effortlessly.

Accessories

Accessories are always the final touch. Use jewelry, belts, scarves, leggings, or whatever personal accessory you desire to compliment your monochromatic look. Use the same color or add a splash of a different color. Remember: when adding a belt to a monochromatic look, a slimmer sized belt visually looks better. A slim belt keeps the eye moving with the color and not focused on the belt.

Update your personal look with these modern monochromatic style tips.

Saks.com Mixing It Up – Music, Marc by MJ, and Chairlift

Music, Fashion, Designer Brands…what’s more fun than that combo?!

Today on Saks.com, these elements come together in a very unique and hip way.  Featuring the pop group Chairlift, all wearing Marc by Marc Jacobs items from the Fall 2009 collection, as video is played on the Saks site, the individual products the band members are wearing are highlighted.  The fall sunshine and their laid back attitude made me smile, as I perused the skinny jeans and new wine colored handbags, envisioning the butter leather feel in my hands.  Shopping + entertainment = quite a creative touch!   I encourage you to take a fun and lighthearted break in your day if you have a few moments to be introduced to a new musical group and check out some new Fall fashions at the same time…

And oh — another bonus is that if you purchase any Marc by Marc Jacobs items, you can get 10 free iTunes songs, including one from the featured band.  Just enter code MARC9A at checkout!

Stylish Shoes Under $50

hystericgirlA bold sense of style does not have to go hand-in-hand with expensive heels – fabulous footwear can be affordable too! For proof, just take a look at our Trendsetter Alice Le’s blog, Hysteric Girl. If you admire big risks in fashion, her blog is a must-read. Remember to check your Sale Spot for more great finds under $50! Just use the price filters.

Recessionista. The most popular word that’s been splattered across headlines and posts on fashion blogs and magazines. In an economy that is still flailing and struggling to make its way up, this term has been coined to represent a now financially conscious fashion sphere that keeps growing. Girls are giving advice on how to save money, yet still look chic and stylish at the same time.

For me, a full-time college student who only works part-time on the weekends, learning to pinch pennies isn’t anything new. Especially when it comes to a love of mine:  shoes. Forgive my weakness, but I can’t resist cheap shoes. Many will spend over $500 on one pair of designer shoes, but I’d rather have 3-4 pairs for that same amount that I can switch outfits with. I don’t like wearing the same things over and over again. Fashion is always evolving and changing. Thick heels might be in one season, and out the next. Unfortunately, UGG boots still seem to be a staple for comfort and warmth…

To feed my shoe addiction and avoid breaking the bank, I browse online replica and designer-inspired stores. Online shopping sites like Gojane.com, Amiclubwear.com, Urbanog.con, and Cutesygirl.com offer designer-inspired shoes at prices ranging from $10-$45. These are pretty amazing prices when you look at how close some of shoes are to the designer’s. If you’re on a budget like me, these sites are a godsend. Lets be honest, most of us do not have Victoria Beckham’s income… or her ability to stand upright in heel-less boots.

These cut-out leatherette heels come in black and brown, costing a whopping $24.20.

gojane_2067_161424785

Thick strap pedestal platform: $35.70. Do you dare?

thickstrap-pedestalplatform

We all know where this one was inspired!  Leopard feather cut-out heel: $31.50

Chunky ankle wrapped heel: $17.90
